Jesus is at home in us

In today's gospel (Matthew 11:25-27) when Jesus thanks his Father for hiding his truth from the learned and clever and revealing it to the humble he is speaking from his own experience. Those who were considered as learned and wise, the High Priests and Rabbis rejected Jesus whereas he was accepted by the poor and humble. Jesus is not rejecting knowledge but rather those who were proud of their position and looked down on those whom they considered to be ignorant. The more we can know about Jesus the better but as one writer says, ''The heart, not the head, is the home of the gospel.'' The more we know about Jesus, the more we learn that he is calling us to enter into a loving relationship with him. The gospel passge ends with the central claim of Jesus, that no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

 

John, in his gospel emphasises this teaching of Jesus time and time again. 'You will know that I am in the Father and you in me, and I in you. Those who love me will be loved by my Father , and I will love them and reveal myself to them.'' (John 14: 20- 21). A writer called Daphne Kingma describes the soul ''as the divine fragment within us...the energy and beauty of pure love. It is our essence.'' Jesus is at home within us. Help us, Lord, to be aware of your presence.
