Celebrating the feast of Sts Peter and Paul

Today we celebrate the solemn feast of Sts Peter and Paul. The first readings show us how they were both protected even when they faced imprisonment and other difficulties, so that they could carry on their mission of preaching the good news of Jesus until their martydom. The gospel tells us of a key moment in the life of Peter. Jesus asks the disciples who do people say that he is. They report that there is much confusion. Then Jesus asks the leading question. ''Who do you say that I am?'' We can imagine their hesitatioin and uncertainty. Then Peter speaks out. ''You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.'' Jesus is so pleased with the answer that he tells Peter that it was revealed to him by God.

 

So now the question for us is what has God's revelation in the gospels told us who Jesus is. What excites me is to hear how John tells us that the Word was present with God at the time of creation and that all was made through him. And the Word was made flesh in Jesus and lived among us. John tell us that Jesus lives in us. ''You will know that I am in the Father and you in me , and I in you'' (John 14:20). Paul tells us that, ''In him we live and move and have our being.'' (Acts 17:28). If I am convinced that Jesus lives in the depths of my being, then prayer is being aware of his presence in all the moments and events of my daily life. Dear Lord, help me not to be too busy to forget that you are always accompanying me.
