Spending time on the mountain

 

Today in the gospel from Luke 9:28-36, we hear of a very important event in the life of Jesus.He had just announced his death and resurrection to the apostles now he went up the mountain to pray to his Father about it. As he prayed he was transformed, his face was shining like the sun and his clothes became brilliant like lightning. He had taken Peter, James and John with him but they fell asleep. When they awoke they saw the glory of God in the person of Jesus and Moses and Elias talking to him of his death in Jerusalem. Overcome, Peter said, ''Master, it is wonderful to be here, let us make three tents for you, Moses and Elias.'' Then they were covered by a cloud and a voice spoke saying, ''This is my Son, The chosen one, listen to him.'' What a powerful happening and what lessons it has for us. The Apostles were sleeping and it was only when they woke up that they saw the glory of God in the person of Jesus. God and his Son are present in all his creation and in all his people especially in the poor, sick and lonely but we have to wake up and open our eyes to be aware of their presence. Peter wanted to built similar tents for Jesus, Moses and Elias but then they were all covered by a cloud and heard a voice saying that the one they have to listen to is Jesus. ''This is my Son, the Chosen One. LIsten to him.'' Peter wanted to stay on the mountain in enjoying all that was happening, but then he saw Jesus alone and they came back down the mountain to accompany Jesus in his mission to those who so needed his words of consolation and hope. Lord, may we have a time on the mountain to contemplate your glory. But may we come down to see you in all the encounters of our daily life. May we hear your voice, Lord, because you have the words of eternal life.
