Letting the seed grow

It seemed just a few days days ago that we were entering into the new year of 2025 and already the first month has passed. It seemed to creep up on us unawares. In today's gospel Mark is saying something similar about the kingdom of God (Mark 4:26-34). He relates two parables of Jesus. The first one which only appears in Mark's gospel is something that all gardeners can relate to. Like the man in the parable, we plant seeds in the garden and each morning have a look to see if there is any sign of life. For a few days there is nothing and then one morning we are delighted to see the green shoots appearing. All we did was to prepare the soil and drop in the seeds. We were powerless to make the seed grow and yet we rejoice in the new life which we recognize as the work of God. Jesus is telling us that when we are conscious of God's presence in our lives, it is not because of what we have done but because God himself is growing his kingdom within us. Only last night at a bible reflection a young lady told us that as times passes she is becoming more aware of God working within her. She cooperates with the grace she is receiving but knows that it a gift from God. Mark's second parable is very comforting when we feel that we are still a long way from Jesus. He tells us that a tiny mustard seed can grow into a big shrub that can shelter birds in its branches. You may feel that your faith is just like that small seed but don't worry, I am knocking on your door. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and we will eat together. (Revelation 3:20) I am the bread of life and I am offering it to you. Receive it and you will live in me forever. 'I do have faith, Lord, please help me to have even more'' (Mark 9:24)
