The parable of the bridesmaids

We are familiar with the story of the bridesmaids waiting for the arrival of the bridegroom. It only occurs in today's gospel of Mathew 25:1-13. The bridegroom is delayed and those waiting doze off. They wake up when they hear the cry, ''The bridegroom is here.'' Five of the bridesmaids realize that they have no oil for their lamps but instead of going to greet the bridegroom anyway they rush off to try to find oil. When they get back the door is closed and they are excluded from the feast. What lesson can we learn from this parable? The bridegroom represents Jesus and he can come to us at any time. He is present in the depths of our own heart, in the people around us who would love us to listen attentively to what they are really saying. He is present in nature, more so now as the first signs of spring are beginning to appear. He is especially present in the Eucharist and the sacraments. Perhaps the bridesmaids are telling us to remember Psalm 46, verse 10, ''Be still and know that I am God!'' I am here all around you, don't rush off to get your prayer book or your rosary beads to meet me. There will be a time for them but for now just sit still and welcome me into your heart. I am keeping the door open for you.
