In today's gospel from Mathew 25:31-46, we hear what is called the Last Judgment. Jesus tells us that we will be judged on how we treat those who were hungry or thirsty, naked, discriminated against or in prison. But the most amazing thing is that he identifies himself with those who are suffering. ''I tell you solemnly, whatever you did to the least of my brothers or sisters, you did it to me.'' ''God is in every human being,'' said St Teresa of Kolkata. However there are two ways of looking at that. I remember years ago a spiritual director in the seminary said that if there is someone that we do not like we just imagine Jesus within that person and try to treat him well for the sake of Jesus. I thought to myself that can't be right. How can I see Jesus in Fred if I write him off? If we believe that God is in everyone then the more that we value and respect Fred or Jane by seeing their good qualities, the more we will be recognizing Jesus within them. Thank you for that lesson, Lord, and may I value and affirm all my brothers and sisters during this time of Lent Then I will be more aware of the love that you have for all of us.
