Today we hear how the Pharisees demanded a sign from Jesus. Jesus sighed deeply and asked, ''Why does this generation demand a sign?'' (Mark 8:11-13). Since the first sign of changing water into wine at Cana, Jesus had been giving all sorts of signs through his healing and other acts of love for the people who were like sheep without a shepherd. The Pharisees could not accept that a carpenter from Nazareth could have such knowledge, love and compassion.. But we are not here today to judge the Pharisees. Mark includes the question of Jesus in his gospel to challenge us today. Are we conscious of all the signs of Jesus all around us? Albert Einstein wrote, ''There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.'' For many years I have thanked God the Father for all the miracles and glories of creation. But it was the words of John at the beginning of his gospel that opened my eyes to see how Jesus too is present. John tells us that Jesus, the Word made flesh, ''was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.'' Help me Jesus to see you in the miracles around me from the stars in the heavens to the tiniest of seeds that can produce beautiful flowers like a petunia. Thank you, Lord for the miracle of love present in families and gifted to me by my friends. May I live seeing that everything is a miracle.
