Of course God Exists

 

When an atheist scoffed at an old man's religious beliefs saying that God does not exist, Harold replied saying, ''Of course God exists, I was talking to him this morning!'' Harold's faith had developed from believing doctrines to one based on a personal relationship with God through his Risen Son. It is a lifelong process and if we find it difficult, we will see in today's Gospel from Mark 10:32-45 that even the Apostles who had spent several years accompanying Jesus still did not understand him or his mission on earth. Jesus had just told them that they were going to Jerusalem where he would be condemned to death but after three days would rise again. Then James and John approach and ask Jesus to give them positions of authority in his kingdom. The other disciples are indignant because they too imagine that Jesus will drive out the Romans and establish Israel as a strong political power and they also want to have leading positions. After the Resurrection and the coming of the Spirit, they realised that the Kingdom that Jesus came to bring was not one of power and domination and they gave their lives for love of Jesus and his mission of loving service especially to those in most need. Like Harold, Lord, may we talk to you as a friend today and dedicate ourselves in our small way to bringing more love and peace into our corner of our troubled and violent world.
