The importance of faith in our lives

The Apostles were puzzled by the actions of Jesus that we read about in today's gospel of Mark 11:11-26. First of all, Jesus curses a fruitless fig tree that soon dies. Then he goes into the Temple and begins to drive out those who are buying and selling there. However there is a connection between the two events. The tree was not producing fruit and Jesus uses it as a symbol of the people who had lost their way and were no longer doing good works. Those who were using the temple for business rather than worship are an example of the people symbolised by the barren fig tree. Jesus then stresses the importance of faith in our lives. But you and I know many people who have no religious belief or faith in God but are leading good lives and helping others. What difference does our faith make to us? I would say to my friend who has no religious belief that my faith makes sense of my life. I believe that my life has a purpose because I was placed on earth by a God of life and love and when I live in peace, harmony and forgiveness, then I am happy. My heart goes out to those young people who ram raid shops to steal liquor, vapes or other valuables, inflicting harm on others.

Dear Lord, as we thank you for our faith in you,
we ask you to pour out your love and protection on those who turn to harmful and criminal acts because of the lack of love in their lives.
Amen.
