Preach the Gospel

There is no doubt that we are living in troubled times. The uncontrolled ambition of political leaders has led to war, oppression widespread poverty and millions forced to flee from their own countries. We can feel overwhelmed because of the increasing number of natural disasters brought on by climate change seemingly out of our control. Listening to the stories of St Paul in Acts has shown us the many difficulties that he faced in his efforts to preach he good news. He was attacked, flogged, imprisoned, stoned and left for dead. You would think it would be enough to make him give up his missionary work. But no, he was constantly encouraged by his faith in the Risen Jesus, whom he had encountered in his moment of conversion. In today's first reading he is told,'' Do not be afraid to speak out. I am with you and no one will harm you.'' (Acts 18:9-18). Jesus gives us a similar message. In the gospel of John 16: 20-23. He compares discipleship to childbirth. But he tells us, ''Your pain will turn to joy,'' as you experience a new life being born within you. Like the pilgrims of Emmaus when our hearts are full of joy our lives will touch others. ''Preach the gospel always and, if necessary, use words'' said St Francis.
