The Presentation of Mary

The Presentation of Mary

Yesterday, the Church's liturgical year ended with the feast of Christ the King. We reflected that the Kingdom of God is not based on power and domination but on justice, peace and love. These values are strengthened by today's feast of the Presentation of Mary. In her hymn, known as the Magnificat, she sings of a God who brings down the powerful, lifts up the lowly and fills the hungry with good things. In today's gospel (Luke 21:1-4), we hear about another woman, a very poor widow, who donates her last small coins to the Temple. There is implied criticism of the prevailing religious system here. How could the rich give their surplus money to the Temple, while turning a blind eye to the most needy people in their midst? Their priests passed by the robbed and wounded man on the roadside. It was the Good Samaritan who restored our faith in the goodness of people who attend to those in need. Let us pray with Mary today as we recognize that he who is mighty has done great things for us. He opens our hearts to be co-creators of his kingdom as we do what we can to bring justice to the excluded, peace to the troubled and love to the abandoned.
