Restoring sight to the blind

Restoring sight to the blind

Today's first reading from Isaiah tells us that the sight of the blind will be restored and they will see what God has done in their midst. The gospel shows Jesus doing that, (Matthew 9:27-31). Two blind men followed Jesus begging for mercy. How could they follow him if they could not see? Someone must have told them about Jesus and so they followed his voice. Then they heard him speaking directly to them. ''Do you believe that I am able to do this?'' They cannot see him but they respond to his word in faith. Jesus touches their eyes and the person they knew only by faith restores their sight. They were truly Advent people. They allowed the information they had received about Jesus to bring them to faith in him and this brought about a transformation in their lives. They could see because they recognized Jesus as their saviour. We are following Jesus on this Advent road because we too have faith in him. We believe in him. Now is the opportunity to ask him for his mercy so that we may recognize all that he has done in our midst. Thank God for the good things, says Isaiah, don't complain and grumble. Help me, Lord, to see that faith in your birth will help me to see your goodness everywhere, especially in that person I criticize so much.
