More about the visitation

There are two parts to the story of the visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. Luke, however, sums up the first stage in a few words; ''Mary set out and went as quickly as she could to a town in the hill country of Judea.'' It was a lengthy and arduous journey of 120 kilometres, How did Mary travel? Did she walk or was she able to ride a donkey? Did she go alone or was she able to join a group? We are not told but it was a brave thing for a young girl to do. However I am sure that she spent the journey talking to the son that was forming within her. What does all this mean? How will Joseph react? Finally she arrives at Zechariah's house and her doubts dissolve as she is given a great welcome by Elizabeth. ''God has blessed you more than any other woman! He has also blessed that child you will have.'' What a relief! Up till now, Mary has guarded the astounding news from Gabriel in silence. Now at last she has someone in a similar position with whom she can share. No wonder she bursts into song. ''With all my heart I praise the Lord, for he who is mighty has done great things things for me.'' May our Christmas celebration remember Mary as much as Jesus. Without the mother, there would be no son. ''Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed.''
