How to produce good fruit

How to produce good fruit

In today's first reading, we hear an amazing story. After the defeat of the Assyrians, king Josiah ordered the renovation of the Jerusalem temple. During the process, a ''book of the law'' is discovered, read to the king and authenticated by the prophetess Hulda. Josiah realizes that the covenant with God has been forgotten and calls the people to an assembly. All agree to follow the Covenant with God once more. It seems incredible that the Word of God could have been forgotten and abandoned. But then we have to ask ourselves what the richer Word of God in the New Testament means to us. When Jesus explained the meaning of the Scriptures to the disciples on the road to Emaus, ''Their hearts were burning within them'', and soon after they recognized him in the breaking of the bread. But sometimes we too can ''lose the word'. In the gospel today, Jesus says that a good tree will bear good fruit. Will those words just go in one ear and out the other? Or will they penetrate into our hearts like a ray of light so that we want to cry out, ''Thank you, Lord, by your grace you have made me into a good tree, so how can I produce good fruit today in my own thoughts, in my family and with all the people I will meet today? If we are united to you, Lord, as the branches to the vine, then you will help us to produce those fruits of love, justice and peace.
