Falling into the circle of divine love

Falling into the circle of divine love

This short passage from today’s gospel reading (Luke 10:21-24) speaks to us about the joyful intimacy that is found in God as three-in-one. The Holy Spirit fills Jesus with joy. In response, Jesus confers his blessing upon the Father, “Lord of heaven and of earth”. Jesus’ blessing is an expression of gratitude. This dynamic or interaction between Jesus, Father and Spirit reveals to us that in God there is eternal flow of joy and thanks and creativity. It is a circle of overflowing love. But in all of creation it is only the innocent and the child-like who have the temerity and naïveté to step into this circle and allow themselves to be overwhelmed by wonder and joyous laughter. It is like seeing a child totter over with excitement towards a big labrador and fall into the dog’s face without fear because the child knows her friend will roll over to allow the child to feel more comfortable lying against her body. This wonderful intimacy found in God is based on trust, like the trust of a child. And so Jesus can embrace all of creation because of his special relationship with his Abba. And that special relationship, the circle of love which is God, is revealed to those chosen by Jesus. That is why we should be happy for what we have been privileged to see and hear. Let us pray, then, that we can allow ourselves to smile with joy, even in moments of adult cynicism and doubt, and rediscover that inner joy which comes from falling into the circle of divine love with utter trust and enduring faith.
