That we may see

That we may see

Last Christmas, I took a family to see the enormous crib outside Pak n' Save in Petone. We stood in awe and prayed for a happy and peaceful Christmas.

Another family passed by and looked at the Nativity scene, but they did not see it with the eyes of faith. Their only reaction of was to say, ''Look at that big cow!''

That is why it is so appropriate that the liturgy today presents us with Matthew's story of Jesus curing two blind men ( 9:27-31) ''Take pity on us that we may see,'' they cry. Lord, may I might not be blinded by shopping and Santa, trees and presents, but let me see the greatest mystery of our life.

The baby in the crib is the Son of God, God Himself totally immersed in our human life. Like the wine and water of the Offertory, divine and human have become intimately united.

May my Christmas response of praise and thanksgiving, not be drowned out, Lord, by a hollow ''Ho, Ho, Ho.''
