On May 5. 1877 Chief Sitting Bull led 5000 members of his Lakota Sioux tribe into Canada to escape the US army. The Sioux tribe had been engaged in a long struggle with settlers who were encroaching on Sioux land, but things got notable worse when gold was discovered in the Black Hills of Dakota in Sioux territory. After being defeated at the battle of Little Big Horn, the US army increased pressure on the Sioux nation forcing the flight into Canada. Sitting Bull and his people remained there for 4 years before returning to the USA.
Creator God,
we ask that you be with all peoples who lands have been taken and who have been forced to live on reservations or have had to move to another country.
Bless those who have been uprooted in recent times because of wars, oppression and poverty.
