The library at Morocco’s al-Qarawiyyin University, built in the 9th century, reopened on this day in 2017 after major restoration work was completed. It was one of the world’s great centres of learning in the ancient world and some claim that it is the oldest continually operating library in the world, The architect in charge of the restoration project, Aziza Chaouni, has included a wing for the general public's use for the first time in its history.
Gracious God,
we give thanks for libraries and for the treasures they hold.
We thank you for the public libraries of today and all the services that they provide for people.
We ask that people might be aware of and use the services that are available for them there.
Amen
