The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum was published on this day in 1900. A fairy tale adventure story it appealed to children in part because it suggests that qualities that seem to be lacking are present just waiting to be discovered and claimed. There is also a great deal of social and political comment in the book which features a strong female lead character. The story can be seen as an allegory about what was happening to farmers and industrial workers under the influence of the gold standard in use when the book was written.

we give thanks for the knowledge and skill of writers and storytellers, especially in creating stories that can be read at many different levels.
We are grateful for all the levels of meaning that are to be found in the sacred stories of our tradition and for the writers and communities that produced them and handed them on.
