The May 16 Notification launched the Cultural Revolution in China in 1966. An article in The Guardian by Tom Phillips written n 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of the event described it a “decade-long period of political and social chaos caused by Mao Zedong’s bid to use the Chinese masses to reassert his control over the Communist party”. It reports that the Cultural Revolution “crippled the economy, ruined millions of lives and thrust China into 10 years of turmoil, bloodshed, hunger and stagnation. Its bewildering complexity and almost unfathomable brutality was such that to this day historians struggle to make sense of everything that occurred during the period”.

we pray for the people of China.
Still under a one-party rule, whose control has been strengthened under its current President Xi Jinping, we ask that its people be free to exercise religious freedom and have a voice in the decisions that impact their lives.
