The foundation of San Marcos University in Lima, Peru was officially conceived by Fray Thomas de San Marton on May 12, 1551. It received approval by from the Spanish Crown in that year and acquired pontifical status through a Papal Bull of Pope Pius V in 1571. It is the oldest continuously operating university in the Americas. When the university was first established there were just three faculties: arts, law, and theology. Today there are more than twenty.

we give thanks for the founding of the University of San Marcos.
We ask your blessing on its staff and students and on all the people of Peru.
We ask that universities everywhere be centres not only of learning but of action that will help to transform the world.
