The Eiffel Tower in Paris was opened on this day in 1889. Designed by Gustave Eiffel as an entrance to the area hosting the 1889 World Fair, it took 2 years to complete. At 320 meters (about 1049.87 ft) tall it was the tallest structure in the world for about 40 years. It was originally thought that it would be demolished after 20 years but it has achieved iconic status and is now a major landmark in the city. It includes a post office and a secret apartment that Eiffel added for himself.
Creator God,
we thank you for the vision and skill of architects and engineers and for the amazing constructions that they have created.
We pray that those skills may also be brought to bear on community housing.
So many countries have a housing crisis and would benefit greatly from the development of cheaper and easier to build houses that are also strong, warm and dry
