On 30 March 1856, the signing of the Treaty of Paris brought an end to the Crimean War that had gone on for 18 months. Signatories of the Treaty of Paris included representatives of Russia on the one side, and the alliance of Britain, France, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia on the other. Russia went to war with the Ottoman Empire seeking to protect Orthodox Christians. Russia also wanted to gain power at the expense of a declining Ottoman Empire. After Russia gained an early upper hand in the conflict, the Franco-British alliance entered the fray in March 1854.
Gracious God
we give thanks for the Treaty of Paris and an end to the war in Crimea.
We ask that in these days, when war is raging in that same area of the world, there may be a treaty to bring this war to an end.
We pray for the people who have suffered directly because of the war but also for all who have been impacted by the rising price of energy and food caused by the conflict.
