There was an unusual ending to the Aintree Grand National on this day in 1956. Devon Loch, owned by the Queen Mother and ridden by Dick Francis, seemed to have the race won. But with just 40 yards to go the horse stumbled and fell for no apparent reason. Dick Francis, who went on to write a whole series of novels about horse racing, admitted that there was no greater mystery than what happened to Devon Loch on that day. The race was won by ESB.
