Pope Adrian VI was elected pope on January 9 1522 and remained until his death on 14 September 1523. Some accounts list him as the only Dutchman to become pope as he was born in Utrecht. Other accounts include him on the list of Germans who became pope. He was the last non-Italian pope until the Polish John Paul II 455 years later. Last week marked the death of Benedict XVI, the most recent Pope to come from Germany.

as we pray for the repose of the soul of Pope Benedict we ask your continued blessing on the Church and on the one appointed to lead it.
