Daily Prayer - February 28, 2023

On February 28, 1947, large-scale protests by the native Taiwanese against the corruption and repression of Chiang Kai-shek’s Chinese Nationalist government began. Following the protests, government troops rounded up and executed an entire generation of leading figures, including students, lawyers, and doctors. Scholars estimate that up to 28,000 people lost their lives.  Martial law continued in Taiwan until the mid-1980s. The “228 Incident” remains a defining event in the political divide that exists in Taiwan today.

Loving God,

we pray for the people of Taiwan and especially for its indigenous peoples.

We ask that the right to free speech be respected in those parts of the world where there is authoritarian rule.

We pray for those who have disappeared into the legal systems of some of these countries and for their families who often get no information on where they are and what is happening to them.

Amen
