Daily Prayer - February 2 2023

On February 2, 1709, Alexander Selkirk was rescued from a small island 400 miles off the coast of Chile where he had spent 4 years and 4 months alone. Concerned for the safety of the ship he was serving on at the time, he asked to be put ashore. He survived and was rescued by William Dampier, who recognised him as a shipmate on a previous voyage.

This story is said to have been the inspiration for the novel Robinson Crusoe written by Daniel Defoe a decade later.

Gracious God,

we are intrigued and encouraged by stories of survival in difficult circumstances and against the odds.

We thank you for the resilience and determination of the human spirit.

We pray for all of those who are presently enduring oppression and conflict and yet managing to survive.

May they find rescue soon.

Amen
