Curtis Sliwa formed a group called the Guardian Angels on February 13, 1979, to patrol the New York City subway system to act as a deterrent to troublemakers and reassurance to other passengers. Their presence was not well received by the mayor or by the police who were suspicious of vigilante groups taking the law into their own hands.
Today the organisation is more involved in teaching communities how to look after their local area and each other. Neighbourhood watch groups are now part of many communities.

we ask a blessing on all those who see an issue in society and seek to take appropriate action.
We ask that they might get help and cooperation from local bodies and from the police so that all may work together to find solutions to shared problems.
