On the 20th of April 1974 the conflict in Northern Ireland (The Troubles) claimed its 1000th victim. He was James Murphy from Co. Fermanagh. On April 10, 1998, the Good Friday Agreement was signed. While by no means a total solution to the issues in the North, it did bring an end to almost 30 years of violence believed to have caused 3500 deaths. Celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement held recently were attended by US President Joe Biden. He came not just to celebrate his Irish roots, but also the pivotal role played in bringing about the agreement by his predecessor Bill Clinton.
Loving God,
we give thanks that the Good Friday Agreement was reached against all the odds.
We are grateful that peace had been restored in large measure to Northern Ireland.
We ask that relationships between Unionists/Protestants and Republican/Catholics will continue to improve as they learn to work together.
We ask that the leaders of our world assist in ending some of the other conflicts that plague our world.
