On this day in 1945 US troops landed in Central Mindanao in the Philippines and moved towards the city of Cotabato. Japan had invaded the Philippines on December 8, 1941, not long after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. Planned to be the first of the major islands to be liberated, Mindanao turned out to be the last. Many Columbans remained in the Philippines during the war years and six of them including Fr Francis Vernon Douglas from New Zealand were killed.

We give thanks for all the Columbans who have served there over the years.
We ask your blessing on the Columbans, ordained and lay, who still work there and for our seminarians, who do a good part of their formation in Manila.
