Daily Prayer - November 17, 2022

The last remaining residents on Great Blasket Island off the coast of Kerry were moved to the mainland on November 17, 1953. The island once had a population of 175. Mainly native Irish speakers, the island produced some important writers in the Irish language including Peig Sayers.

Without any emergency services and with changes in weather patterns life on the island was not sustainable and so the last residents left.

Gracious God

as we remember the last people to leave the Blasket Islands, we pray for the small island nations in the Pacific who continued existence is severely threatened by climate change and rises in seas levels.

We ask that we might take the action needed now to save these islands so that the people can remain in their home places.

Amen
