Daily Prayer - May 29, 2022

The summit of Mt Everest was reached for the first recorded time on this day in 1953 by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. They spent just 15 minutes at the top.

On the dangerous trek back down they took time to search for signs of George Mallory and Andrew Irving who disappeared in their attempt to reach the top in 1924 but found nothing.

Malory’s body was eventually found in 1999.

Hillary established the Himalayan Trust to help build schools and hospitals in Nepal.

Lord,

as we remember the achievement of these two men we are aware that the mountain they climbed has become a symbol for all the major obstacles that people face.

We pray that the courage, determination and persistence of these mountaineers will inspire struggling people to keep going and so conquer their own particular Everest.

Amen
