Daily Prayer - May 26, 2022

US president Richard Nixon and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev signed the SALT I treaty on May 26, 1972.

Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) were first proposed in 1966, aimed at limiting the number of nuclear missiles, both offensive and defensive, in US and Soviet arsenals.

SALT II was signed in 1979.  START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) followed in 1991 and new START in 2011. It was extended to 2026 by the Biden administration.

Lord,

we see how painfully slow negotiations to reduce strategic missiles can be.

We are also aware of how destructive nuclear weapons can be if used.

So we ask that negotiations for the reduction of such weapons will continue and also include other nations that now have a nuclear arsenal.

It is our fervent hope that such weapons will never be used and may indeed be phased out entirely.

Amen
