Daily Prayer - May 21/22, 2022

Seven Trappist monks were killed on May 21, 1996, in Algeria according to the Armed Islamic Group (Groupe Islamique Armé).

On March 27 they came to the abbey in Tibhirine, where the monks had established good relations with their Muslim neighbours.

They took the seven monks they found there and held them for two months. Their decapitated heads were found at the end of May in 1996. Fr. Jean Pierre Schumacher, who escaped capture, claimed that 114 imams had also been killed for opposing the violence of the Algerian civil war.

Lord,

we pray for all those who work in the area of interfaith relations.

We remember especially those who have given their lives attempting to live in harmony with those of other faiths.

We ask your blessing of the people of Algeria that the blood of the martyrs may help to bring peace to their country.

Amen
