Daily Prayer - May 2, 2022

During the civil rights movement in the USA in the 1960’s marches were common.

However, the one that took place in Birmingham, Alabama on May 2, 1963, was a bit different. About 1000 school children took part in a controversial march against segregation.

600 were arrested but the following day the students returned. The police used water hoses and dogs against them.

The outrage sparked by this action was a contributing factor in the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Lord,

as we remember the struggle against discrimination and racism in the 1960’s we are aware that the struggle is an ongoing one as witnessed by the Black Lives Matter movement.

We have also seen school children concerned about climate change taking to the streets in recent times.

We ask that we may hear the voices of those who have deep concerns about our world and what is happening in it and that appropriate action be taken to end discrimination and protect the planet.

Amen
