Daily Prayer - May 19, 2022

Over the centuries there have been many predictions that the end of the world was nigh. One of these happened on this day in 1910.

The cause this time was that the earth was to pass through the tail of Halley’s Comet. One scientist suggested that the tail contained a poison (cyanogen) that would kill all life on earth.

Another was that it would massively impact the world’s oceans.

As often before with doomsday predictions nothing unusual happened apart from the fact that many people bought anti-comet pills.

Lord,

sometimes we are quick to feel panic when doomsday predictions are made.

Sensational headlines in the media can fuel this panic.

Help us to be calm and clear when rumours abound and conspiracy theories multiply.

We ask that media reporting be driven by the desire to keep people informed rather than increasing sales.

Amen
