Daily Prayer - June 8, 2022

On June 8, 1987, the Labour Government passed the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament and Arms Control Act.

The sinking of the Greenpeace protest ship Rainbow Warrior in Auckland in July 1985 galvanised an anti-nuclear movement that had emerged in opposition to both French nuclear tests at Mururoa and American warship visits to New Zealand. The American response was to downgrade New Zealand’s status from ally to friend.

The Prime Minister David Lange said that was a price he was willing to pay

Lord,

at a time when the threat that nuclear weapons might be used again is rising and after nuclear accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima, we are grateful that New Zealand is a nuclear free zone.

We ask your blessing on those who hold to their principles even when it means alienating friends who don’t share the same principles.

We ask that governments step up the development of sustainable and renewable means of generating power.

Amen
