On June 7, 2021, Guy Ryder, the head of the International Labour Organization, a UN Agency, described the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world of work as “cataclysmic”. It was seen as four times as severe as the financial crisis of 2008-2009, which left countries like Greece and Ireland struggling with austerity budgets for years.
It estimated that as many as 100m workers were pushed into poverty by the pandemic.
Lord,
we ask you to be with all who have been struggling because of events like the economic crash of 2008, the pandemic of 2020 and now the war in Ukraine.
Help us to realize that events have a global impact and that it is the poor of the earth that suffer most in times of crisis.
Amen
