Daily Prayer - June 4, 2022

June 4 marks the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

After the failure of the Great Leap Forward (1958 -1962) and the horrors of the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) under Mao Zedong, Hu Yao bang took over as Chinese leader in 1980. He advocated for social and economic reform. After his death on April 15, 1989, more than 100,000 students took to the streets of Beijing to mourn him and call for a more transparent system as well as an end to corruption.

These gatherings continued until the night of June 3 when troops from the People’s Liberation Army were sent in to clear the square. It is still not known how many died on that day.

Lord,

the hopes of many Chinese people for reform were brutally supressed by the events in Tiananmen Square.

The facts about that day have not been revealed and there have been attempts to even erase the memory of it from the minds of the people.

We pray for the people of China that their hopes and dreams for reform will one day be heeded.

We ask for deliverance for those suffering persecution.

Amen
