Daily Prayer - June 10, 2022

In the early hours of June 10, 1886, a major volcanic eruption began on Mt Tarawera, near Rotorua. Many Māori settlements around the mountain were buried in ash that was as much as 20m deep in places.

It is estimated that 120 people died but local iwi stories suggest the number was much higher.

The famous Pink and White Terraces disappeared. A GNS survey in 2011 is believed to have found part of the Pink Terrace in Lake Rotomahana at a depth of 60 meters.

 Lord,

we live on the ring of fire and so people here often wonder when the next major volcanic eruption or earthquake/tsunami will occur.

We ask for your protection and pray that the messages we get about how to respond is such circumstances will help to keep people safe.

Teach us respect for the power of nature and also how to care for the still evolving planet we live on.

Amen
