Daily Prayer - July 28, 2022

On July 28, 1893 Kate Sheppard and her companions presented a petition to the New Zealand Parliament bearing over 25000 signatures demanding women’s suffrage. She had argued that women “are tired of having a “sphere” doled out to us, and of being told that anything outside that sphere is “unwomanly”.’

The Electoral Act 1893 was passed by both houses of Parliament and became law on 19 September giving all women the right to vote.

Lord,

we give thanks for Kate Shepherd, who in the face of sometimes fierce opposition persevered and succeeded in gaining for women the right to vote.

We pray for those areas of the world where women and girls are denied the right to education or work opportunities.

Amen
