On this day in 1865 William and Catherine Booth, seeking to bring the gospel message to poor people, began what is now known as the Salvation Army.
Aimed initially at people in the West End area of London, it now operates in over 130 countries.
The Sallies have earned a powerful reputation for their work with the poor and their annual Red Shield appeal is supported by people of other traditions who are aware of their good work.
Lord,
the mission begun by Catherine and William Booth sought to go out to where people were and bring the good news to them.
We ask you to bless the work of the Salvation Army today.
We also pray that the constant encouragement of Pope Francis for our church to go out in a similar way will be heeded and that we will find new ways of communicating the gospel in our world.
Amen
