Chinese leader Zhao Ziyang and British PM Margaret Thatcher signed the Sino British Joint Declaration on December 19, 1989. This set the conditions for the return of Hong Kong to China on July 1, 1997. Hong Kong would retain its special status and autonomy for 50 years.
However in more recent times China has severely cut back on the freedoms given to Hong Kong by the agreement and have clamped down heavily on protests in the territory. Only “patriotic” candidates can be elected to public office.
Loving God
we pray for the people of Hong Kong and for all the people of China.
We pray for the leadership team of the Columbans that has its base in Hong Kong.
We ask that agreements that have been signed between peoples or nations will be honoured and implemented.
Amen
