On December 18, 2012, five female health workers vaccinating children against polio were shot dead in Pakistan. Another male worker was also killed. One of the victims was a 17-year-old schoolgirl volunteer. Four of the killings, which officials said were carried out by masked men on motorbikes, took place in the southern city of Karachi, on the second day of a drive to eradicate polio from the country.
It was not clear who was behind the shootings, but Taliban insurgents have repeatedly denounced the anti-polio campaign as a western plot.

They are not only on the front line of the struggle against various dangerous diseases, but in recent times have been subject to attacks on their lives from those who have bought into various conspiracy theories about vaccinations.
We pray for those who are searching for cures to diseases like cancer that they may be successful.
