Daily Prayer - August 31, 2022

In a surprise announcement on August 31, 1994, the Provisional IRA declared a ceasefire in Northern Ireland. It stated that after a quarter of a century of armed conflict it was prepared to end all military operations and enter into talks about the future of Northern Ireland.

This ceasefire did not last but this declaration was a major step towards the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 especially when Loyalist paramilitaries also declared a ceasefire 7 weeks later.

Loving God,

we give thanks for all the steps that have been taken to bring peace to Northern Ireland.

We know that not all issues have been resolved and that some still have concerns about the future.

But we pray that what needs to happen will happen though negotiation and not violence.

Amen
