An earthquake and tsunami hit areas of the Moro Gulf in the Philippines on August 17, 1976. Pagadian City was hit hard by the tsunami and the Columbans who worked there witnessed the devastating impact first hand.
I was in language school in Ozamis on that night and while the earthquake woke all of us there, we had no idea what was happening in other parts of Mindanao until later.
Compassionate God,
be with all who have suffered as a result of earthquakes and tsunami.
We ask a special blessing on the people of the Philippines where natural disasters like volcanic eruptions, typhoons, and earthquakes make life even more of a challenge for a people already struggling with poverty and in some areas with on going conflict.
