Daily Prayer - April 24, 2022

In 1916 there was an uprising against British rule in Ireland.

On April 24th at the GPO in Dublin its leaders published a Proclamation of Independence.

It was signed by the 7 men, Padraig Pearce, Thomas Clarke, Seam McDiarmada, Thomas McDonagh, Eamonn Ceannt, James Connolly and Joseph Plunkett.

All were executed between May 3 and May 12,1916. The rising itself is described as a heroic failure.

However, the execution of the leaders was to turn the tide of public opinion in Ireland.

Lord,

some of the leaders of the rebellion were poets and teachers.

They felt the rising was likely to fail as they were poorly equipped and greatly outnumbered.

But they believed that the symbolic effect of their willingness to sacrifice themselves might bring about the change they desired.

Be with all who struggle against governments that have been imposed on them, often by the military.

Many know that if they protest, they will face imprisonment and even death.  Yet they continue to do.

May your resurrection give hope to those who seek new life for themselves and for their countries.

Amen
