Daily Prayer - April 18, 2022

On this day in 1506 the cornerstone of the current St Peter’s Basilica was laid by Pope Julius II.

It was not completed until 1626 and had a number of architects including Michelangelo.

It replaced the old St Peter’s that was built in the 4th century.

It is a physical symbol of a tradition that goes back to St Peter, whose tomb is believed to be located under the main altar.

Lord,

St Peter was chosen by you to shepherd your flock.

We ask your blessing on Pope Francis who presently holds the office first given to Peter.

Guide him as he seeks to be faithful to the tradition that has been passed on through the generations while seeking to communicate the joy of the gospel to the world of today with its unique challenges and opportunities.

Amen
