Daily Prayer - April 10, 2022

Today is the anniversary of the sinking of the Wahine in Wellington Harbour in 1968.

It happened during one of the worst storms recorded in New Zealand history and was one of the worst maritime disasters here in recent times as 53 lives were lost.

The storm also marked the coming-of-age for television news broadcasting in New Zealand as camera crews rushed to report on events as they unfolded.

There is a Columban connection to this story as Fr. Jim McGlynn was on board and managed to survive the sinking.

Lord,

over the centuries many, many lives have been lost at sea and we commend all who died to your mercy.

Many lives are also lost when people are having fun at the beach. We ask that people be aware of the power of the sea and do all that is necessary to stay safe.

We ask a special blessing for those who work at sea and those who minister to them through the Apostleship of the Sea.

Amen
