Overcoming Obstacles in Life

Jaime Quispe, a  catequist in the the parish of Combapata

A parish in the Andes of Peru could consist of anything from 20 to 100 small villages which means that it is difficult for a Columban missionary to visit each one regularly. Nevertheless, the aim is to have an active christian community in each pueblo (village). This is only possible through the dedicated work of lay catequists. I would like to introduce you to Jaime Quispe, a  catequist in the the parish of Combapata in Peru.

Several times every week Jaime travels to a pueblo where he guides the gathered community in prayer, song and a bible reflection. His first language is Quechua so he is able to lead the meetings in that language. Jaime is very much respected and admired by the communities because he is unable to walk. He moves about in type of wheel chair that he propels by manually turning a chain connected to the wheels.

Not only has he been a great help to me in supporting communities but he has also entered into local politics and is now the Provincial Governor.  We can say that because of his great determination Jaime has successfully overcome the obstacles in his life.

Fr Don Hornsey now lives and works in Aotearoa/New Zealand after spending many years as a Columban Missionary in Peru
